C-19 Vaccination Doesn’t Increase Abortion Risk

Worrying during your pregnancy is completely understandable but I want to be another voice that helps you know that the data on the COVID-19 vaccine and fertility/birth is clear – there is no associated risk.

I haven’t posted much on my account about this topic (mostly because my fellow sci-commers have done such a fabulous job covering it)! Today I wanted to cover a recent publication in NEJM looking at the v-safe pregnancy registry for reported spontaneous abortions. The numbers were compared to the rates of spontaneous abortion in publications looking at baseline rates prior to Covid-19. Of the historical publications, one with the highest baseline rate (orange) and one with the lowest baseline rate (blue) were plotted next to the v-safe registry data.

Of note, the v-safe data was analyzed in two ways:

1. Sensitive (yellow): Any individuals that did not complete all follow-up time points were assumed to be an abortion event. This would result in a large overestimate (or exaggerated) abortion rate.

2. Regular (gray): Individuals that did not complete follow-up were excluded from the study.

Importantly, both the regular and sensitive analyses were between the two chosen historical publications looking at baseline spontaneous abortion rates – in other words there is no additional risk of spontaneous abortion in those who were vaccinated!
