Monitoring Adverse Events

Monitoring for adverse-events after vaccination is fundamental to public safety and is taken very seriously. But how does it work? There is a very robust system in place to monitor for safety! Let’s get to know it so we can place our trust in it. Understanding is power.

In this post I go over the general series of events that will take place after a person experiences an unexpected symptom after vaccination. I then dive a bit deeper into what VAERS is, who makes up the ACIP, and how compensation works through the NVICP. How are decisions made after concerns have been flagged? Read on!

Finally, we round off with a page going over what our role is in this whole process. Each of us has a responsibility to report adverse events, encourage curiosity and engagement at the policy level, and educate others on how we can help those who may have suffered from a rare vaccine-related injury.

**Importantly, COVID-19 vaccines are currently not covered by the NVICP because of their EUA status. They are instead covered by the CICP.
