How does the Oxford/AstraZeneca Vaccine Work?

Lots of talk surrounding the recent EUA approval of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine in the UK! Phase III trials are still underway in the US.

ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 delivers the DNA sequence encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein inside an Adenovirus capsid that has been stripped of its ability to replicate.

Study data from Brazil/South Africa/UK shows efficacy and safety. More data to come as the US wraps up its Phase III.

Of note, there were two subsets within the UK arm in the trial – one set received a half dose followed by a full dose 4 weeks later. The second set received a full dose followed by another full dose 4 weeks later.

Interestingly, the subset that received the half dose at shot one showed greater efficacy (~90%), whereas the double full dose group saw about 60% efficacy. This is being further studied!

Keep an eye out for more trial data and further investigation into dosing decisions!
