Let’s talk about some of the most common ways gene therapy is used to treat disease!
In the last post of the gene therapy series I introduced the central dogma of molecular biology. It is important to understand that DNA leads to RNA which encodes for protein. If you understand that fundamental concept then when you hear gene therapy you’ll understand that while it means that some form of genetic material is being introduced (DNA or RNA), it will have some effect on protein.
In this post I go over three common ways (with examples) that gene therapy is used to treat disease.
1. Produce a missing protein.
2. Knock-down a mutated protein.
3. Produce a new therapeutic protein.
