Continuing the virus series today but in a slightly different way.
We’ve all seen “China Virus” used to describe SARS-CoV-2 this past year. This is dangerous. Dangerous for both the safety of the many Asian-Americans in our communities and for our science literacy. This use of language has given hate-filled groups/individuals permission to continue and/or increase racist and harmful behavior. It has also grown the divide between two parts of the world.
“China Virus” does not exist. It is not scientifically correct and has no place in our conversation. I encourage you to correct this dangerous misnomer when you hear or see it.
Call it what it is – coronavirus!
