You can be here! A series that captures the duality of our thinking.
I collaborated with @fueledbyscience on this post to challenge the separation of spirituality and science. We challenge the notion that those dedicated to evidence-based science can’t believe in a power that is undetectable. We challenge the notion that if you believe in a God, you betray that power by learning through science.
We are both scientists but bring very different lenses on spirituality. She was raised in an atheist / agnostic home and I in a Christian one. Below is my take and I encourage you to read hers as well. We share a common goal of fostering discussion and breaking down false barriers.
I grew up in a strongly religious family that always encouraged my love of science. Growing up for me, religion explained the why and science explained more of the how. Overtime my religious views have been reconstructed, but I’ve never lost the belief that there are forces around us that are beyond our capacity to measure.
A few years ago I read a book aimed at finding common ground between people of different views. The author stated that everyone pursues three things – Truth, Beauty, and Goodness – and that by recognizing that, you can come to refine your own path and respect that of others. I think about this almost daily. It is through this lens that I have come to recognize that both spirituality and science play two very different but significant roles in my life.
“The pursuit of truth without beauty makes us cynical.
The pursuit of truth without goodness makes us lonely.
The pursuit of beauty without truth makes us gullible.
The pursuit of goodness without truth is misdirected.”
– Jon Ogden
I’m here to say that you can be here! The space in-between.
